Correct motorcycle gear?

This isn’t a question. I had an accident today. It was at 30 mph and it was a car that pulled out in rush hour traffic as I was travelling down a bus/bike lane in the UK.

I want to say that it’s thanks to the fact that I was wearing correct riding gear that I only suffered a potentially written off bike and a very sore right heel that I was able to jump up straight away and deal with the situation in a calm, if extremely shaking manner.

I’ve ridden in a t-shirt and jeans, and even shorts before, and it’s only after this accident that I’ve realised how important it is to ride with all the correct gear. So if like me you have a ‘closet’ death wish, please reconsider because you have no idea how grateful you’ll be if you have any kind of accident and you were wearing properly reinforced riding gear! I’m sure most people understand how there are some laws that don’t make any sense. Well think about the law that requires you to wear a helmet and no other form of protection, and how much sense that makes!

That is all, thanks for reading.
Just in case anyone’s interested, the car hit me from the front side, luckily missing my leg and throwing me head over heels onto the road. I landed on my head and shoulders and rolled over to naturally end up standing up as part of the stunt! Impressive, I’m sure, but again, it’s thanks to the gear I only had to sit in an ambulance and not make a visit to A&E!

Wow, glad you are alright. I always wear my gear. As a newer rider I’ve made a conscious effort to make it all part of the process. I think if I didn’t wear all my gear, I would worry about it and it would take my mind off of riding.

I fuss at my boyfriend for not wearing his jacket. He likes to only wear it when it’s cool, or when he’s riding hard. He gives in most of the time.

Should we ban cars from twisty A roads in the UK.?

Well done to you for not only surviving your accident – but bringing the benefits of wearing the correct gear to everyone’s attention…..
I can vouch for what you say from personal experience….. I’m one of the older gals from the time when helmets weren’t compulsory….. but my crew and I decided it made sense …. we always wore our leathers ‘cos they were cool anyway!……
but when I had a back tyre blow out at 70mph and rolled down the road like a rubber ball – I suffered some friction burns inside my leathers but my thanks and prayers went straight up when I saw my helmet ….. at the time it was a Bell helmet – one of the best you could get back then – 7 layers – and the 4 inch circular patch that had been worn away so that you could see the lining of helmet through the remaining one layer showed me how close to heaven I really came ….. no-one in their right mind would swap the wind in their hair for their life – unless they were on a one way ticket…..
    Again – well done you!

Hi Spike, I am really glad you are A-OK. This is why I preach in my answers the importance of ATGATT.
All The Gear, All The Time.
Two weeks ago this evening I went down after hitting a dog.
    Poor dog. Bad Owner.
I too was wearing riding gear. My skinned up knee is just about mended.
Please read about my accident below.
I shudder to think if I had been wearing a regular jacket and sneakers.
Listen up fellow riders, you never know what is going to rise up and put you down. Wear good riding gear every time you ride.
    Safe Riding to Everyone!!
    Max

The law still doesn’t make sense.
Laws are to protect the public from an individual, not the other way round.

Now that that’s out of the way, I’m glad you’re ok.

And this is the exact reason why I say motorbikes are NOT dangerous, car drivers are !!

Glad you’re ok, my brother recently had an accident where a car pulled out with no indication and his bike ended up ontop of his legs, apart from a huge bruise his armoured leather gear saved him from serious damage.

Well first of all I’m really pleased to hear you are okay. I’m sorry about your bike, but rather the bike than you, hey? Hopefully your bike will be replaced by the car drivers insurance anyway.

Thanks for posting this, hopefully it will make the rest of us think twice next time we are thinking of going for a ride with inadequate protective clothing (not that there are many times in this cold country). I find it alarming the amount of people I see riding around without even wearing gloves… Don’t get me started on the rest!

Good on you Spike, this shows good common sense. I am a car driver – Yes stop giving me grief – who also rides a Bike swinging arm conversion Trike. Whilst legally I don’t even need to wear a helmet on the trike, I bought the best helmet I could afford, leather armoured trousers, boots and gloves and wear them whenever I am out. I always wear a leather jacket as standard being a metal head. I was also responsible and did the off road section of the CBT so I was aware of the controls etc of a bike as I had never been on one before.
