PostHeaderIcon My Priest is hassling me again. Is this legit, or is he mad about something else?

My old Honda Insight Hybrid is starting to develop electrical problems. That’s not good in a partially electric car. So I find I am driving my Honda Silverwing more. A Silverwing is a very large motorscooter about the size of a Harley. The mileage is fantastic, since I am a very small, skinny, man. I go to my local Catholic Church. I bought my first motor bike late in life. In fact, I only bought my bike when my Dad died and left me some money. So I wear a lot of protective gear. I have for example, the best helmet money can buy. I have boots, and several expensive motercycle suits. Built in pads, and what not. Big shiny engineer boots. So here is the problem I go to church in my motorcycle suit. I leave the helmet in my bike’s storage container, and come in my my motorcycle suit. My boots are shined and look good. My motorcycle suit is clean, and all black. It doesn’t have stripes or things like that. I wear a clean, white, pressed (at the laundry) button down shirt, and a black tie. I think I look pretty good. I keep myself in good shape. I look great when I come in. A lot of the young people check me out when I come in. But the older priest has pulled me off to the side to speak to me. He says my outfit is disrespectful for taking Holy Communion. I think he is unfair. I look a lot better than some person with a big potbelly, and a greasy tie, and a 25 year old sport jacket that looks like it came off a homeless guy. I think this is not about my pretty much new motorcycle outfit that looks really good. I think this is about the fact that I have mentioned to him in confession that I am bisexual, and I also don’t think he likes my long hair, or the fact that on Thursday Adult Bible study, I mention the fact that Jesus never condemned homosexuality, and neither do the Ten Commandments. Some of the people, particularly the illegal aliens, come in dressed like they were just shoveling out a barn. The older priest never puts the hassle on THEM. What is WRONG with a pair of really well shined boots, an all black motorcycle suit, a pressed white shirt, and a dry cleaned black tie? What? I also think this is related to the fact that I am really short. People tend to treat you like a kid when you are really short, even if you are in your early 30’s. They like to boss you around. I think the older priest is just picking on me. The younger priest is nice to me and never hassles me like that.
Wow, Orthodox Christian, reporting bad behavior really works. Now when you stalk me, you don’t insult me for being gay!

Perhaps you could explain why homosexuality is the only REAL sin to people like you. I guess your view is that everyone else in my parish is pure as the driven snow, and without sin? I live in low income neighborhood in Los Angeles. We have gang members in my church who have gotten out of prison for killing people. The priest doesn’t concern himself with them at all.

I think you are right, because it is not about what is on the outside of the body, it should be about what is inside the heart. Your priest has a problem with you, and as long as your clothes are clean, and you are not being disruptive in mass, the priest can not say much to you about what you wear.

You are not wearing it out of disrespect, so next time you tells you that you are being disrespectful, point out to him that if you where offending god, he has more then enough powers to deal with you when you stand before him on the day of judgement, then you can smile and say, I will pray for you to more tolerate of those who’s lifestyle choices and modes of dress differ from yours.

Leave it at that. You are going to run into biogited people who are offended by your sexuality everywhere you go, and the older, more old fashioned priests are going to be the worst about it.

Just keep doing what you are doing. They can not stifle your individuality, and if you need to find a different, more tolerant church, then so be it.
